Teenage Magazine Research

Research into linked media production

The linked production piece will include a 3-page spread in a magazine.
    Shout
    Seventeen
    Teenvouge

Looking into the younger actresses only accepting Disney films where the female character goes against the traditional representation of women. This would have a target audience of 12-14 year old females.
Magazines that this article would feature in:

Seventeen would be another magazine that appeals to the younger audience. The differences from this magazine to Shout are already clear as they use two different colours to be able to appeal to their audience. From stereotypes they are using pink and blue, which would indicate that they are appealing to both females and males however that is not the case. From the title being bold pink you can see that is it across Rihanna’s head showing that the magazine may not be as well known as other young female audiences. The fact that the title of the magazine is an age may refer to the age they want to appeal to or the age that their readers may want to be, therefore this target audience would be to old for the audience that my coursework would be referring too. Once again the model is not sexualised, the image itself is to her face more than her body by the photo being a mid-close up with the text being mainly across her chest, framing her face and collar-bone. Therefore this style of photo seem to be more popular on teenage magazines.

This magazine is a well known label of 'vogue' by having both a teenage and adult version of their magazines, meaning that within these two magazines there are differences to what the company will post depending on the different target audiences. As shown from the title this is the teenage edition of this magazine, Although Ariana Grande is a Disney channel star the magazine she is staring in is more of a fashion magazine instead of interviewer style. However shown from the sub headings on the magazine you can see that the star will be giving her version of events on males and her year of developing from Disney star into signer. However for my target audience I don't feel that this style of magazine would be most appropriate as the magazine itself is targeted for an older age range. This can be shown through simple aspects like the background of the image, which is a coloured wall with the star leaning on a railing, whereas the others had clear backgrounds appealing to the younger audience as they are most interested in the star on the front instead of the image of the star itself.

This last magazine is known as 'Shout' another teenage magazine that is read for the gossip on latest teenage or young celebrities mainly focused on love lives shown from the front cover of 'crushes and couture' from Emma Watson an extremely well known actress from the Harry Potter film series that were a massive hit with all age ranges. The front cover itself is very bold with an almost black background yet has someone in the background of the image. This is the only magazine to be offering a freebie within the magazine to appeal more to the younger target audience as they have less money to spend on make-up which is what the magazine is offering a lip gloss. This magazine is also offering a '100% style!' section offering style tips to the younger which would appeal greatly to a 12-14 year old as they are only just beginning to explore their own fashion sense. They are also offering a 'How to heart yourself' page with a 'prepared to be inspired' page once again appealing massively to this  age range as they have just moved onto secondary school and may need some positively.

Overall I would be using 'Shout' magazine to put my article in as I feel that this magazine cover would be the most appropriate for the target audience I would be appealing to. From the front cover you can also see that there are a lot more interview material within the magazine such as 'Charity work changed my life' and 'Modelling's so much fun' with a small in tell of what these pages will offer to the reader. As my 3-page spread will be a front cover of the star with a double page spread of her interview on being able to pick between Disney films depending on the genre and plot of the traditional representation of women.
