Double-Page Spread Test Shots

Double-Page Spread Test Shots

From learning from the front page test shots that it is good to use two locations to give a better range of images to choose from to ensure that I get the best quality image that fits the description in the best way. Therefore for the main image on the double page spread I had two different ideas for this, I was either going to have 'Emily' looking into a mirror doing make-up or was going to have an image of her auditioning on a stage as the image needed to be long and narrow to ensure that it could fit in the gap I had left on my double page spread.
The image below are all the test images from the first idea that I had. I needed the image to be narrow and long therefore was going to be taken from a distance from the mirror and needed the image to be taken from the left of Emily to ensure that the title had room to fit on the left side of the image as followed from the inspiration from the magazine brought.
Idea one

Idea one - flash on

Idea one - different view of model

As shown form the test images above; the camera worked at its best when the flash was off to give the image the correct colour and reflection shadow so that it didn't crowd Emily's face. You can see that in the second test shot with the flash on it changed the complexion of Emily's face and made it much lighter therefore stopped the lens from focusing on the lights coming out of the mirror. The last test show is to see the difference from the way the model was positioned and to give myself a range of images to choose form again.

Final Image used for this idea:

After the first set of test shots I went onto the second idea that I had. This involved using a different range of lightings from the lighting panel, including spotlights. This location was in a drama studio with a range of different spotlights and filters that were available for use.

Idea two - no filter or flash
Idea two- Flash and red filter

Idea two - red filter

From the test shots above you can see the differences between having the flash and the filter. In the end I decided that no filter or flash was needed as the spotlights clearly highlighted the models for me. The final image also wasn't taken from a higher angle this was used to purposely show the different location of each spotlight and filters for the test shots.

The final image selected from this idea:

Front Cover Test Shots

Front Cover Test Shots

While taking the images of my model I decided to take some test shots of where these photos where going to be taken and the shadows that are there from the buildings around. As I was cutting my model out the picture the location of the image didn't really matter it was more about the sunlight and shadows that were coming through. There was two locations that I decided to use and then select the best image that came out with the sunlight and where the model looked how I needed her too. From location 1 I decided that the lighting wasn't as bright and there was a few shadows over lying the area but when the sun came around it was brighter and could be used. From the second location I decided that the light was facing the correct direction and wouldn't be blinding my model too much to ensure that she could still look at the camera without hurting her eyes as you can see from the images it would be the best location for the model to enable me to get the best quality images for my front cover.

Location 1

Location 2

Location 2 - side on

However when I was reviewing the images the better quality images came from the first location which was surprising. Supporting my reasoning for using two locations because images from both location came over in very different ways with different qualities from each location that the other location didn't have.

The final image that I choose to use is found on the left hand side.
